HTTYD: A Hero The Hard Way by KenjisArtDump HTTYD: A Hero The Hard Way by KenjisArtDump
After kicking off the HTTYD sketch series with Stoick, the natural course of action was to present you with the book's protagonist, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, the Hope and Heir to the Tribe of the Hairy Hooligans. Here we see him with his hunting dragon, Toothless, and his ancestor Grimbeard the Ghastly's sword, Endeavour.

When approaching this drawing, my first priority was to portray the differences between the character's description in the books and the different but excellent route taken by the movie. That was made easier by the fact that the book version is a few years younger, which allowed me to differentiate between the two by means of discarding the teen aesthetic in favour of a more childlike quality.
I deliberately kept most of his clothing's design from the movie intact, as I happen to really like what they did there.

Concerning Toothless: I honestly had to make a choice in the interest of originality here, since I am convinced that the movie version did as perfect a job as it was humanly possible of capturing the little guy's indolent chip-on-the-shoulder attitude, albeit transferred upon a cameo character (those among you familiar with the movie know that Toothless himself underwent a major overhaul and ended up as Toothless in name only, while being effectively a completely different character).
Here I tried to produce a design I could call my own. I think it works, but trust me when I say that he doesn't look remotely enough like the spoiled brat he is.

He probably is. I wanted to make him an important part of the image, which is probably why he ended up being a bit bigger than he should be.

Good on you for "scaling back" (sorry, it was perfect).  It's always harder to know when to pull back a bit and let the eye finish the detail for you.  That was the best advice Lynnai received from a pro artist (a fellow named Rick Berry, who takes that to an extreme yet makes it work) and her pieces actually became MORE realistic as a result.

As for your design on both Hiccup and Toothless, these are great!  I really like the slightly rotated helmet.  And don't worry, I think Toothless's expression says plenty about his brattiness.

Thanks! I'm trying not to lose my penchant for detail while still getting a cartoon-ish feeling of cleanness. For example, I initially tried to draw ALL scales on Toothless's body, but it looked too intricate for this style so I decided to make it simpler.
